John Kim is Founder and Managing Partner of Brewer Lane Ventures. Prior to founding Brewer Lane Ventures, John was President and Chief Investment Officer of New York Life Insurance Company. During his 10 year career at New York Life, he led the growth of the Company’s assets from $213 billion to $582 billion, while managing the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.
As a career investor, John started New York Life Ventures in 2012 which over the subsequent 6 years, produced top quartile performance. Previously, he held CEO roles in other insurance, retirement and asset management firms including Prudential Retirement, CIGNA Retirement and Investment Services, and Aeltus Investment Management, a subsidiary of VOYA.
He is currently a board director at three insurtech startups. Additionally, he is on the board of trustees of Eversource, New England’s largest energy delivery company and a national leader in clean energy, and was previously on the board of FiServ, a global provider of financial services technology.
John received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Connecticut.
Martha Notaras is Managing Partner at Brewer Lane Ventures, investing in early stage insurtech and fintech companies focusing on delivering: full stack solutions; infrastructure to empower incumbents; innovative approaches to risk and distribution; and data.
Prior to joining Brewer Lane, Martha was a Partner at XL Innovate, investing in insurtech, including startups focused on new business models and data & analytics. XL Innovate’s investments include Lemonade, Embroker, Cape Analytics, Zendrive and Pillar Technologies.
Previously, Martha ran corporate development for the business data and analytics division of the Daily Mail. Of the 20 investments Martha made for the Daily Mail, two achieved valuations over $1 billion. Martha has served as board director for many early and growth stage companies, focusing on fintech, insurtech, proptech, edtech and digital media. Martha’s prior experience includes investment banking at Merrill Lynch and commercial banking at Credit Suisse.
Martha serves on the boards of directors of Palomar Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: PLMR), which provides catastrophe insurance for personal and commercial property, and ATTOM Data Solutions, a leading provider of property data to the real estate, financial services and insurance markets.
Martha earned her A.B. cum laude from Princeton University and her MBA from Harvard Business School, where she was a Baker Scholar, awarded for graduating in the top five percent of the class.
Chris Choi Downer
Chris Downer is an Investment Principal at Brewer Lane Ventures. Prior to joining Brewer Lane, Chris was a Principal at Sorenson Ventures. At Sorenson, Chris partnered with innovators focused on solving large problems which could be tackled through the deployment of new technology and data sources.
Prior to joining Sorenson Ventures, Chris was a Principal at XL Innovate focusing on early-stage analytics and insurtech investments in North America, Europe and Asia. At XL Innovate, Chris was a board observer at Pillar Technologies, an end-to-end environmental monitoring solution for construction sites and a board member at Stonestep, which provides microinsurance as a service in emerging markets.
Before joining XL Innovate, Chris was an Associate in the Alternative Investments and Manager Selection Group of Goldman Sachs. During his five years at Goldman, he developed special expertise in emerging markets and Asia and worked in both the New York City and London offices.
Chris graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College, with a BA in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and a minor in History.
George Castineiras is an Operating Principal at Brewer Lane Ventures. Previously he was the Managing Director of Gibraltar Ventures, the innovation lab and venture capital group of Prudential Financial, which is focused on exploring emerging business models, investing in ideas, and developing unique solutions for meeting unaddressed client needs. Under his guidance, Gibraltar made strategic investments in nine organizations and continually sourced deals and performed due diligence on new opportunities that meet the needs of Prudential’s customers. Prior to Gibraltar Ventures, he was a senior vice president at Prudential Financial where he lead the turnaround of Prudential’s underperforming Total Retirement Solutions business unit with $180 billion of assets under administration and more than 6000 institutional clients nationwide. Before Prudential Financial, he was Vice President and National Sales Director for Metropolitan Insurance, where he established leadership positions in three market segments and directed a national sales organization that consistently surpassed organizational revenue goals.
George was named “Top 100 Most Influential People in the Retirement Industry” and one of the “Top 25 Hispanic Executives” by respected industry publications, was Founder and CEO of 4 innovative companies and Chairman of the Board of Directors of 3 businesses affiliated with Prudential Financial, and holds 3 patents and 16 trademarks.
He earned his MBA at the MIT Sloan School of Business and BA in Finance and Economics at Loyola Marymount University.
Stephen Sotiriou is an Investment Associate at Brewer Lane Ventures. At BLV, Stephen focuses on sourcing and analyzing insurtech and fintech companies. Prior to Brewer Lane Ventures, Stephen worked for SenaHill Partners LP, a fintech-focused merchant bank where he aided companies in financing and merger & acquisition transactions and strategy. Stephen helped companies in all stages and industries including insurtech, capital markets, data analytics, payments, banking and lending, and business process outsourcing. Prior to SenaHill Partners, Stephen was a Senior Associate in the restructuring group of Grant Thornton LLP, helping companies through distressed situations both in and out of court. In those high stress situations, Stephen helped healthcare and insurance companies manage cash, analyze and execute on the best go-forward business strategy, and overhaul operations to achieve a sustainable and healthy business.
Stephen graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Emory University’s Goizueta business school concentrating in finance and information systems and operations management. During his time at Emory, he held an internship within the treasury and capital allocation group at Amgen Inc., one of the world’s largest independent biotechnology companies and with Hightower Advisors – Bapis Group, a Forbes top 150 national financial advisor. He was also a member of Emory University’s varsity baseball team, taking 2nd in the nation in 2014.
Stephen prides himself on being a chartered financial analyst (CFA) Charterholder, and Utah sports, Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers fan.
Courtney Howe is the Business Manager at Brewer Lane Ventures. Courtney has previously worked as the Marketing Communications Manager and as the Executive Assistant to the CEO at The New England Center for Children, a non-profit organization serving children and families with autism around the globe. Courtney has also worked in media relations at Hebrew SeniorLife’s Institute for Aging Research (an affiliate of Harvard Medical School) where her work focused primarily on scientific research related to the diseases of aging.
Courtney received her BA in Political Science from Trinity College and her MBA with a marketing concentration from The McCallum School of Business at Bentley University.
Rohan Malhotra is an Investment Associate at Brewer Lane Ventures. Previously, he led growth and expansion initiatives at Newfront Insurance, the fastest growing insurance brokerage in the country powered by technology. Prior to joining Newfront, Rohan was part of the founding investment team at Argo Ventures, a fintech-focused venture capital fund capitalized by Argo Group (NYSE: ARGO). He began his career in product strategy and design at a New York City-based innovation consultancy.
Rohan graduated from the Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a B.A.S. in Computer Science from Penn Engineering as well as a B.S. in Economics from Wharton. He also earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
Chris Williams is Chairman of Siebert, Williams, and Shank LLC, an investment banking and financial services company. Previously, Williams was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Williams Capital Group, L.P. and Williams Capital Management, LLC (Williams Capital), an investment banking and financial services firm, from the company’s formation in 1994. Prior to founding Williams Capital, he managed the derivatives and structured finance division of Jefferies & Company. He previously worked at Lehman Brothers, where his roles included managing groups in the corporate debt capital markets and derivatives structuring and trading.
Chris serves on numerous prominent corporate boards including Ameriprise Financial, Union Pacific, Clorox and Cox Enterprises. He also serves as a trustee of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and The Partnership for New York City.
Chris brings a wealth of investment banking and investment management expertise to his role as an advisor to Brewer Lane Ventures.
Joan Lamm-Tennant is the Founder and former CEO of Blue Marble Microinsurance, a corporation formed by a consortium of eight insurance entities for the purpose of developing service ventures enabling insurers to enter the microinsurance market. Previously, she was the Global Chief Economist and Risk Strategist of Guy Carpenter & Company, the reinsurance and risk advisory operating company of Marsh & McLennan Companies, where she served as an advisor to C-Suite executives and board members. Her expertise includes core insurance, specialty insurance, and risk. In 2009, she served as a Risk Strategist for Marsh & McLennan and formalized the enterprise wide risk oversight function.
Prior to joining Guy Carpenter in 2007, Joan was the Founding President of General Reinsurance Capital Consultants (GRCC). Prior to her executive positions in industry, she had a successful academic career. She was a prolific author in academic and business journals and an adjunct professor at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, holding the Laurence and Susan Hirsch Chair in International Business.
Joan serves on the boards of Hamilton Insurance Group, Ambac Financial Group, Equitable Holdings, and Element Financial Corporation. She previously served on the boards of Selective Insurance Group and Ivans.
Joan brings significant insurance, risk, and Insurtech experience to her role as an advisor to Brewer Lane Ventures.
Tom Hutton served for ten years as the first CEO of Risk Management Solutions, a pioneer and global leader in providing risk modeling software, data, and analytics related to catastrophic risks to the insurance industry. His insurance career continued as CEO of White Mountains Re and as board director of several insurance and reinsurance companies including XL Group, Safeco, Montpelier Re, Centre Cat, and Palomar Specialty. Tom also spent four years as a consultant at McKinsey and Company.
In 2011, Tom founded New Energy Risk in partnership with XL Group. Tom served as CEO until he founded XL Innovate in 2015, where he currently serves as Chairman. New Energy Risk addresses opportunities to apply insurance to support the development and financing of clean technology and renewable energy solutions and infrastructure, through an innovative form of insured technology performance.
Tom has been a board director of SoFi, a leader in consumer lending, since the formation of the company. He also serves as a board director for several other venture-backed companies, including Lemonade and Slice Labs.
Tom brings significant knowledge of venture capital and P&C insurance as well as deep entrepreneurial experience to his role as an advisor to Brewer Lane Ventures.
Fred Terrell is the retired Executive Vice Chairman of Investment Banking and Capital Markets at Credit Suisse, where he later served as Senior Advisor, from January 2018 to November 2018. From 2010 to 2017, he served as Vice Chairman of Investment Banking and Capital Markets at Credit Suisse. Fred was a member of Credit Suisse’s Investment Banking Committee, its Managing Director Promotion Committee, and the Board of Trustees of the Credit Suisse Americas Foundation. From 1997 to 2008, he was Founder and Managing Partner of Provender Capital Group, LLC, which made private equity investments in emerging growth-oriented companies.
Fred is a member of the Investment Committee of the Rockefeller Foundation and is on the board of Viacom CBS and BNY Mellon. He also serves as trustee of the Partnership Fund for New York City, Center for a New American Security, the Economic Club of New York City, and the Council on Foreign Relations.
Fred is a former member of the board of directors of the New York Life Insurance Company, Wellchoice, Inc., and Carver Bancorp Inc., where he served as Chairman of the Board.

Kris Canekeratne, is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Virtusa, a publicly traded fintech company. As CEO, he plays a key role in defining the company strategy and using technology and innovation continuously to maintain Virusa’s leadership in the industry. He is an expert in financial services technology and an experienced entrepreneur.
In 1997, Kris co-founded eDocs, Inc., a provider of electronic account management and customer care, later acquired by Oracle Corporation. In 1989, he was one of the founding team members of INSCI Corporation, a supplier of digital document repositories and integrated output management products and services, serving as its Senior Vice President from 1992 to 1996.
